Used Car Loans in the UAE: Age Limits, Deposit and Monthly Payments

Banks finance used cars much as they do new ones, with one extra question: how old the car will be on the day the loan ends.

You can finance a used car in the UAE with most of the main banks. The rules start from the same place as a new car: a deposit of at least 20% and repayments that fit within 50% of your income. What changes is the car itself, because the bank has to be comfortable lending against something that is already losing value.

How old can the car be?

Banks measure the car’s age on the date the loan ends, not the date you buy it. Each lender sets its own limit, and it is commonly somewhere around 7 to 10 years at the end of the term.

So the age of the car decides how long you can borrow for. With a 10-year limit, a 6-year-old car can only be financed over 4 years. That shorter term raises the monthly payment, which is why an older, cheaper car does not always cost less each month than a newer one.

Deposit, term and minimum loan

  • Deposit: at least 20%, and some banks ask for more on older cars. Putting down 25% to 30% can improve your chances and lowers the payment.
  • Term: up to 60 months where the car is young enough, and often less.
  • Minimum loan: many banks will not lend below about AED 20,000 to AED 25,000, so very cheap cars may not qualify.
  • Rate: usually higher than on a new car, and flat rate offers need converting before you can compare them.

A worked example

You buy a used car for AED 60,000 with 20% down, and borrow AED 48,000 over four years at 3.99% flat. The figures here are for illustration, because your rate depends on the bank and on you.

  • Interest: AED 48,000 × 3.99% × 4 years = about AED 7,661.
  • Total repaid: about AED 55,661.
  • Monthly payment: about AED 1,160.
  • The same loan as a reducing rate: about 7.46%.

Buying from a dealer or privately

A dealer is the simpler route. Banks know the process, the dealer supplies the quotation, and the bank pays the dealer directly.

A private sale can be financed, but fewer banks do it and there are more steps. The bank will want the seller’s details and the car’s registration, and it may need its own valuation. If the seller still owes money on the car, that loan has to be cleared and the bank’s claim removed from the registration before the car can transfer to you. Ask for a liability letter from the seller’s bank early, because this is where private sales most often stall.

Can I get a used car loan without a salary transfer?

Yes. Most main banks offer one, though the rate is usually higher and the checks on your salary and employer are stricter. If moving your salary is an option, compare both on the total you repay.

What banks check

  • Your salary, your employer and how long you have been there.
  • Your AECB credit report and your existing commitments. Our guide to car loan eligibility in the UAE covers the salary and score banks look for.
  • The car’s age, mileage, condition and value. The bank lends on its own valuation, so a price above that valuation has to come from your pocket.

Before you pay a deposit to the seller

  1. Check how old the car will be at the end of the term you want.
  2. Get your eligibility confirmed, so you know the amount and rate.
  3. Have the car inspected, and check its history and service record.
  4. Confirm whether there is an outstanding loan on it.
  5. Compare offers on the total repayable in dirhams.

Used car finance varies more between banks than new car finance does, so the same car can be approved by one lender and refused by another. Our auto finance team checks which lenders will take the car and your profile before you commit, then handles the application.
